Record 18 Herts Leaders on course |
There are 98 registered coaches in Herts, compared with 96 a year ago. However, this is in spite of running two Leaders Courses of 12 and 18 participants and a Coach Part 1 of 12 participants this year. So overall there has been a loss and gain of some 40 coaches. Most of those lost are juniors taking Leaders Award as part of an A-Level course and who rarely use the qualification. However, most of our regular and new coaches are very active. The Leaders and Coach Part 1 courses organised in October were subsidised by an Awards for All grant. In return for the subsidy the attendees provided 5 and 10 sessions, respectively, of free junior coaching. The arrangement brought real benefits to badminton in Herts: some examples of this are: |
1 In Watford: Two CP1 coaches, Kim Waddup and Andy Roberts, are now working in this area where we have had a lack of coaches for several years: Richard Doling is utilising their talents wherever possible.
2 In Dacorum: Sue Edmanson are establishing their Junior Club and will be helping Frances Morrison with the junior cell in Berkhamsted.
3 In North Herts: Jonathan Pancutt, previously a Leader and Junior County Squad player has expanded his coaching activities, helping Bob Green at Baldock junior sessions, and me with a GCSE class at Knights Templar School. Jeff Gentry, a teacher at Willbury School, Letchworth has increased his already large junior coaching involvement. Kevin Leader and Dave Wright in Royston BC are now expanding their club juniors.
4 In Stevenage: Robin Wade has establish a Junior Coaching session at Shephall Sports Centre, Stevenage with the help of Jeff Gentry and Dave Bartlett.
5 In Welwyn Hatfield: CP1 Helen Walker, previously a Leader, with her brother Barnaby (Leader), set up an adult session at Hatfield Leisure Centre which is oversubscribed. Unfortunately they will be going to University and leaving the area at the end of the summer.
6 In East Herts: Cathy Wheatley, Steve Hummersone, and Jez Donaldson, Linda Clarke separately funded are developing Albury BC. Doug Clark is helping All Saints Juniors, with EH Herts Youth Games squad and elsewhere in the district.
In the meantime many other coaches in Herts have been very busy, too.
A postponed coaches masterclass has now been organised for 15th June: World Class Start Manager-coach, Jens Gril will be providing the session on ‘What juniors should know at U11, U13, U15 and how to coach it.’. The small fee for the course, £12, is only possible due to Gill Bartlett offering to cross subsidise it through work she is doing for the BAoE.
Four Herts coaches (Steve Willis, Ewan Harnetty, Dave & Gill Bartlett,) attended the National Coaches Conference at Milton Keynes in November and found the sessions (including one by Jens Grill) extremely useful and enjoyable. This event is likely to be held annually.

Richard Doling, our County Development Officer, is coaching Herts junior better players and through the BAofE, World Class Start juniors at Haberdashers Askes School. He has also set up several schools sessions particularly in SW Herts and has coached several personally. Richard would be glad to visit clubs to provide hints and tips, play with club members, provide coaching or discuss development – an offer not to be missed (tel: 01923 223896). Richard has established a Coaching Agency to bring coaches and clients into a more professional arrangement. Many of Richard’s coaching activities are integral with Development projects, see below. |
This season John Warner Sports Centre opened in Broxbourne and Stanstead Abbotts have moved in and expanded. Dave Bartlett represented Badminton at the open day in February. East Herts bid for a new 6 court facility at St Mary’s School, Bishops Stortford failed to obtain Sport England support owing to the suggestion that the community could use the centre at Stansted but at least partly we suspect owing to reduction of Lottery funding available. However, St Mary’s School are going ahead with a 4-court facility and will welcome community use: advice and documents have been to Tony Barrance, governor, on the project. North Herts’ bid for a centre at Royston also looks less likely, decisions are imminent.

At the University of Hertfordshire the 12-court ‘Centre of badminton for Herts’ is on target for opening in August – the sports complex is called Herts Sports Village. There has been agreement with UoH management for HSBA and HBA to block book 30 Sundays from September 1st to April 30th : HSBA U11 and U13 squads plan to use Wednesdays and U17 squad on Thursdays. Provision for county practice is being discussed. A Coach Part1 course has been scheduled to start in November. |
Richard Doling has continued his initial work in Three Rivers and the current sessions he coaches at the Royal Masonic School are likely to be expanded via an Awards for All bid for summer coaching courses into a full-blown junior club in September. Through his discussions with Watford SDO expansion of junior sessions are likely there too. Similarly St Albans are keen for him to help with schools in this District. He has assisted coaches in the area who are themselves now setting up coaching sessions and/or clubs.
Frances Morrison continues to develop junior badminton in the Berkhamsted area and several of her players and helpers have now qualified as coaches. She is also forming links between her Bridgewater school (where she teaches) with others in the area. Richard Doling is providing sessions at Thomas Corum School, Berkhamsted.
This district continues to expand its developmental progress and many more juniors are coming into HSBA tournaments and squads. Bob Green continues to coach at Knights Templar SC, Baldock and HBS SC, Hitchin and was the organiser for the NH junior tournament where the participants topped 100 (an increase of 40% on last year). We would like to put the District Cell at Hitchin Junior BC at HBS SC on a firmer footing with more members and an option for higher level coaching. Heath Hall are desperate for facilities in NH - they currently use Stevenage LC.
Stanstead Abbotts moved into the new John Warner centre last summer has allowed them to expand and continue the great work they are doing. Bishops Stortford BC are desperate for new facilities (see Facilities section, above.
Our new club, Albury, is the most remarkable. Starting in August last year they had 4 members and now have 41 of whom 31 are juniors! Their Awards for All grant has been of great assistance.
As mentioned above, the new Shephall SC is now home to Saturday junior coaching session run by two new Leaders from St John’s BC. SDO Matt Warren, Stevenage have provided £990 to HBA to fund coaching to all ten secondary schools and free KS 3&4 coaching packs to all the teachers that take up the offer.
Richard has progressed the Active Communities project in South Oxhey and has provided coaches for the courses in this project.
As mentioned above, Richard is working with the SDO, Sarah Calcutt, and as well as the Awards for All, above, has started sessions at Cassiobury Junior School, Watford.
Swifts JBC, Gosling BC, and the Goode’s Academy continue to produce badminton players with considerable successes in their own bailiwicks.
Across the county more clubs are affiliating to HBA some that do not currently play in our leagues such as Cam Gears in North Herts, Hastoe, Dacorum or not in leagues at all such as Cottered and Albury. We are grateful of their support and welcome any suggestions to improve our services.
Herts Youth Games included badminton again with some 85 children from 8 Districts participating in the finals in May 02. Badminton was again included this year: Dacorum came first, Welwyn Hatfield second and North Herts third. Each year it is a struggle for those Districts where we haven’t got a strong club structure to find teams, however, it is worthwhile for those who do participate and for us, generally, in maintaining a high profile of our sport.
Our website continues to expand thanks in particular to various contributors. We try to maintain information of use to players, club organisers and coaches as well as news items.
Gill and Dave Bartlett attended this conference representing HBA-HSBA and we were the only sport to have a promotion stand. We raffled a racket thus obtainimg the names of 45 teachers interested in badminton. The racket was won by Jill Eaton, Schools Sports Co-ordinator for Marriotts Sports College, Stevenage. Many more of the 200 teachers attending took away some of our information on badminton. This is a very worthwhile event to promote our sport, which will hopefully be annually.
HSP has the backing of all those involved in sport in Herts, from District Chief Leisure Officers, Sports Development Officers, County PE, Local Authority and County Council councilors, sports facilities managers, clubs, league organisers and coaches. The recent inclusion of Active Sport in HSP meetings is bringing coherence and eventually, if a full merger happens, resources to sports organisation, activities and plans. Badminton is well represented at HSP by Malcolm Fraser (Chairman HBA), Marion Conway (Swifts JBC), Ken Abbott (Lingwood BC), Janet Stephens (Ward Freman BC), Gill Bartlett (Gosling BC), Bob Green (Hitchin BC), myself (HSP Steering Committee). This will help ensure their clubs and badminton generally within the county, maximise opportunities. You are very welcome to join.
Herts Badminton is in Partnership Sport (PS) a sub-section of Herts Active Sports starting May 03. This will allow coaches and clubs to compete on quality with those of other large sports. PS will fund our coaches to obtain coach accreditation through attending the subsidised Child Protection and Equity courses. Club officials will similarly be funded to attend these and Developing Your Club sessions leading to Club Accreditation, see next.
In April this year the BAofE launched the Badminton In Schools/Society Initiative Club Accreditation scheme (levels of Registration, Bronze, Silver and Gold) encompassing Sport England’s Clubmark (as ‘BAoE BISI Silver’ level). Herts AS Club & Coach Development team will help us help clubs attain these accreditations. Gill & Dave have helped the BAofE develop the schemes. All Herts junior clubs will receive information and accreditation packs in July.
In recognition of the efforts and impact of juniors who have helped badminton in Herts we have established two Awards: ‘Young Volunteer of the Year’ has been won by Ceri Lumb who has this year (as in the past) contributed to significant help with junior tournaments. ‘Young Coach of the Year’ has been won by Helen Walker who has helped with junior coaching in Herts as a Leader and more recently Coach Part1: she, with her brother Barnaby set up an adults coached session at Hatfield. HSBA and HBA wish to thank them both for their significant contributions. Presentations will take place, 28th June, at Swifts AGM where they were both members.
In conclusion we, the Development Committee, recognise and thank all coaches, clubs, helpers who have made this a very successful year.
The coming season will be at least as busy as last year for Herts members. As well as all our usual activities there are the challenges of:
1 A Coaches Masterclass by World Class Start manager, Jens Grill – 15th June [Post Report: 26 Herts coaches attended a very inspiring and useful session].
2 The opening of our Herts Centre of Badminton at Herts Sports Village in September and the consequent new opportunities and events such as an Open Day 6th September, possible England v Holland in November and Inter-county Premier match February 14 & 15th (confirmed).
| 4 Roll out of BISI Club Accreditation scheme starting in August-September | |
3 Participation in Partnership Sports projects: Club and Coach development (see Neil Deans’ talk at the HBA AGM)
