Herts Juniors Help Raise the Olympic Flag at Herts Sports Village

Herts County juniors Emily Westwood and Mark Sadler helped raise the Olympic flag at a handover ceremony at Herts Sports Village, 24th August.

As part of the celebrations taster sessions were provided by sports including badminton by Graham Hall, Gill and Dave Bartlett.

At the UK Schools Games on Sunday 1st September Emily Westwood and Sam Dobson won the first gold medal of the tournament in the mixed doubles courtesy of a walkover after Daniel van Hooijdonk and Sarah Thomas from Wales were forced to pull out of the event through injury.

Gobi Ranganathan Defends his Singles 4-Nations Title in Cardiff and Comes 2nd in Level and Mixed Doubles

Gobi signs a young competitor's T shirt at Herts Youth Games in May

Gobi reports on the Welsh  tournament w.e. 16th August : "I took part in Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles with fairly successful results – 2 Silvers (Men’s and Mixed Doubles) and 1 Gold (Singles). [Ed: a bit more than fairly successful!]

Unfortunately my regular doubles partner was unable to compete so I had a substitute player, Michael Smith from Northern Ireland, alongside me. We finished as runners up losing 2-0 (scores: 15-8, 15-8) in the final.

I took part in the Mixed Doubles event for the first time and was partnered by Sharon Jones Barnes, a newcomer to disabled badminton. We finished 2nd in the group stage and progressed to the Semi Final where we played the winners of the first group. We won 2-0 (scores: 21-4, 21-15) and progressed to the Final. Once again, we were runners up in this losing 2-0 (scores: 15-8, 15-10).

In the singles event, I won all my group games winning 21-1 (v Michael Smith [Northern Ireland]), 21-9 (v Steve McGrath [Wales]) and 21-20 (v Damien Hallett [Wales]) and faced Damien Hallett again in the final. I was 14-18 down in the group game so to win 21-20 was pleasing to say the least!

I won the final against Damien 15-8, 15-9 to retain the singles title I won in Scotland back in April.  Next up is likely to be the Irish leg at Lisburn (near Belfast) in November so I’ll be training hard for that."

Some great badminton played by Gail, Nathan and the rest of our Team - see BE CEO Adrian Christy's salutation:

'Athens silver medallists Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms were fittingly the last GB players to fall - but not before a superb comeback win over China's second seeds Zheng Bo and double Olympic champion Gao Ling .

They were only beaten in the end by an outstanding display from Korean pair Lee Yong Dae and Lee Hyo Jung in yesterday's mixed doubles quarter-finals in Beijing.'   See full report on BE website:

Malcolm Jellows, Herts New Development Officer, is  Welcomed at  HSBA AGM - His First Official Event

Malcolm Jellows started employment with BADMINTON England as Herts new Badminton Development Officer, on 16th June (email: malcolmjellows@badmintonengland.co.uk, Mo: 07725 413547).

He attended HSBA AGM on 19th June at Birchwood Leisure Centre, Hatfield, and got a warm welcome - and a very good introduction to the workings of this our junior-focused organisation. As well as the comprehensive officers' reports, examples of dedicated voluntary work for junior badminton in the county were very evident.

HSBA AGM Continued from column on the left...

Byron Perry (L) and Malcolm Lumb (R) receiving thank you presents from HSBA Chairman, Ken Winchester.

Byron Perry has completed some 30 or more years in various official capacities particularly the coaching of Gazelles JBC which is now wound up and Malcolm Lumb who completes some 12 years as HSBA Treasurer.

Rhian Blowers, Young Coach of the Year, receiving the shield from HSBA Chairman Ken Winchester.  Proposers, Marion and Duncan Conway, wrote: 'She has been a regular attender at both Under 13 Squad practices (2 hours per week) and at Swifts JBC (2 hours per week).  However at Swifts she has often stayed on for the rest of the evening ( a further 2-3 hours). She has regularly led group practices with considerable enthusiasm and inspires the players to perform beyond their normal standard.

Primary Teachers Coaching Course - a Great mix of Teachers and Herts Coaches

19th June saw 5 Primary school teachers and 5 coaches attend the 7-hour BE Teachers Coaching Course, Primary, lead by tutor, Sue Rutson at Hatfield's Jim McDonald Centre.  The mix of teachers and coaches provided some very useful cross-fertilisation of ideas.

Tom Burton, Our Badminton Development Officer, Leaves Herts with a Very Significant Legacy

Tom Burton leaves badminton in Hertfordshire with a tremendous legacy of worthy development on Friday 2nd May.  Not only are our organisations - Herts Badminton Association, Herts Schools Badminton Association and our Badminton Herts Development Committee - extremely grateful for the amount and quality of his work but innumerable grass roots players from the youngest to the oldest have benefited from the programmes and funding that he has initiated and progressed.  We wish him all the very best in his new job as Team Leader of Sports Development in St Albans.  As he says "I'm looking forward to staying in sports development but working from a different angle".

A replacement BDO was sought by BADMINTON England and Badminton Herts - see Malcolm Jellows annoncement on Main page.

13 Herts Coaches attended Badminton for Teachers Course at Hitchin College, on Sunday 13th January

click on photo for a larger version and here for more course photos

This 7-hour course was for coaches who wish to understand how players develop,  apply Long Term Athlete Development concepts and understand the primary school educational curriculum requirements.  It was enjoyable, not least because coaches used fun equipment that they don't normally use.  The course was delivered by BE Junior Lead Coach, Jo Hughes (in red, far left in photo) and was heavily subsidised through HBA's Awards for All grant from the normal £115 to just £10 each.   Attendees came from across Herts and included experienced Level 2 coaches through to those just planning to attend a Level 1.
