Herts and England No.1 Lady, Gail Emms, visits local junior clubs Friday 16th March
On Friday 16th March, Gail was invited back by Nick Goode to join in playing with their Herts University-based junior squad where she had been coached for many years.   She was then easily persuaded to visit nearby Swifts JBC at Hatfield LC where she played with Herts junior, Fiona Perry.  Needless to report, everyone really enjoyed the visit. Can you spot Gail in the middle, with Swifts Coaches, Marion Conway, far left and Duncan Conway, far right?

All England 7 - 11th March

Gail Emms and Simon Archer got to the semifinals where they were ultimately defeated.  But for a first time to play together and get so far in such a prestigious event is amazing.  See full report at BAofE website

Earlier William Kings, Editor of Badminton, had written:  ... But despite the knee injury Archer fancies his chances this week. The man with the world record 162mph smash, who won the All England mixed with Olympic partner Jo Goode in 1999, said: "I think Gail and I are capable of winning the title."  There is a lot on the All England on the BAofE website:  All England

North Herts Junior Tournament Nov 2000

Seventy U12 and U15 children gathered at 12am on Saturday 11th November at North Herts Leisure Centre for the (first?) North Herts Junior Tournament. These numbers were as a result of help from Sarah Goodale, NH SDO, sending letters (twice) to each N Herts school plus some chasing around by several coaches! Many children came from The Grange and Wilbury schools in Letchworth but there were representatives from several other schools and junior clubs. As there were only 4 courts for exactly 4 hours for both the singles and doubles the usual 'Round Robin' format was proscribed in favour of 'winner stays on up to 3 times'. As it was, up to 10 participants in the singles waited their turn to play up to 7 points on half courts and the organisers (Dave and Gill Bartlett) feared that some might wander off. But such was the enthusiastic interest, most watched and cheered-on their friends from behind the hall barrier.

It would not have run so smoothly without the help of the court administrators (and sometimes, scorers). These were: Bob Green, Leader and helper at HBS Sports Centre clubs, Jane and Jeff Gentry from The Grange and Wilbury schools, Diane Hubbard, Racquets BC and helper at the Hitchin JBC, Heather Tyrrell, Jonathan Pancutt and Will Eichler from Hitchin JBC and Mr Bottazzi, a parent of two of the participants.

North Herts Junior Tournament in North Herts Leisure Centre, 11th November

Remarkably, the tournament finished half an hour early which gave time for participants to play those they hadn't played in the matches - and all courts had to be shooed off at 4pm!

Gold and Silver medals were presented to winners and finalists and certificates to everyone - and several photos were taken showing everyone looking well pleased! Everyone was given a leaflet on the clubs and coaching sessions in North Herts and over 30 court winners, finalists and runners-up were given offers for free sessions at the Hitchin Junior club or HBS SC Thursday coaching.

Herts Restricted Tournament in October

At the end of some exciting games and preliminary rounds, a select group of players shared the finals honours between them.

After a bruising three-game, 75-minute semi-final battle against Andy Walden, Chris Patten lost the men’s singles final to Jon Austin.  In the men’s doubles, Jon & Chris were runners-up to the partnership of Jim Teale & Brian Lockie.  Jim & Lindsay Orchard came out winners against Brian and Kati Tibor in the mixed doubles.  Playing together in the ladies’ doubles, Lindsay & Kati were runners-up to sisters Caroline and Suzanne Hale (photo, right).  To crown the day, Lindsay retained her second title when she came out on top in the ladies’ singles round robin.

Thank you to everyone who supported the tournament as players, and to all those who helped to make the tournament run smoothly.
