Front Row: Linda Reeve (team manager (ess))Herts 40+ team won all of their games against Essex, Derbyshire, Somerset and finally Lancashire, on Sunday. But it all went down to the last match of the tournament – second mixed against Lancs where Kim & Kevin Maughan won in 3. It wouldn't have been possible without Elaine & Chris winning their ladies, and a crucial end that Tim Jalland and Don Burden won in the men's (before losing setting in the third). England Pull off another 3-2 Win over Germany |
|
|
ENGLAND pulled off another 3-2 win over Germany at Hatfield tonight (Wed)
to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match Hi-Tec Carlton badminton series.
Olympic silver medallist Gail Emms was the star of the show, winning the mixed
doubles with her Athens partner Nathan Robertson in front of her adoring
Hertfordshire fans.
In fact, it was the doubles events which rescued England for the second night
running.
As in Portsmouth on Tuesday night, England lost both singles as Aamir Ghaffar
lost to Bjoern Joppien and Tracey Hallam lost to Xu Huaiwen, both in straight
games.
But Robertson and Robert Blair won the match by beating giant Ingo Kindervater
and Kristof Hopp 15-8 15-5 after national champions Ella Tripp and Jo Wright
had trounced Nicole Grether and Carina Mette in the women's doubles 15-8 15-0
to make it 2-2 on the night.
The women's doubles was always going to be pivotal. When Army star Juliane
Schenk arrives to bolster the German squad by teaming up with regular
partner Grether in a world top 10 pairing, it may well be too late for the
visitors. It was that pairing which denied England the bronze medal at the
European Championships in Geneva last April.

Government
Announces large Spending Increases in Sports Development
In December 04 the Government announced an expansion of the PESSCL strategy with key targets for all children to be doing a minimum of 2 hours per week curriculum PE and a further 2 to 3 hours of sport per week outside school hours by 2010. To support delivery of these targets Government has allocated an additional half a billion pounds for the period up to 2008. Herts Badminton Association are vigorously progressing our plans to maximise this opportunity with Herts Sports Partnership and the BAofE over the next months. One likely outcome will be that we will have a Badminton Development Officer funded through BAofE and Sport England in the new financial year.
